Good people do good things. The Mamdani effect. Childhood trauma - how it shows up. Ways to let it out.

Mamdani: an unusual politician who gets where he is, gets what's going on and gets good things done. He remains joyful. He responds fully and authentically to questions. His team is representative.

Don’t you just love what’s happening in new York City? As mayor, Zohran Mamdani gives hope in these Trumpian times. Not just hope, though. He gets positive change done. The truly beautiful fact of the Mamdani matter is that where there is political will, and a bit of redistribution of resources and wealth, change gonna come. Where the fundamental intention of politicians is to be helpful to others, we can anticipate increased overall well-being in the community at large. Zohran Mamdani has wrought significant change in his team, and by immediately implementing policies designed to relieve the stress that ordinary people have in their lives. He emphasises that the largest class is the working class.

Is there a defining symptom of childhood trauma?

There’s a podcast with Dr Ramani (www.drramani.com) and Patrick Teahan, (patrickteahan.com) which has been remixed a zillion times. Finally I caught it again at @SoulSurgeryWithAndrea. Dr Ramani asks Teahan what, for him, the defining symptom of childhood trauma is.

‘For a lot of us it is trying to get a difficult person to be good to us’.

If you’ve been stuck in that kind of groove, you might start to find a way out and forward through family constellations therapy. That groove may be littered with people who you picked to be in your life because with them you can faithfully replicate the agony of longing that characterised your early life, because they are like one of your parents or caregivers. Does that sound like your meet, get beaten - one way or another - rinse, repeat? Perhaps you’re ready to get out of there. There are hundreds of different therapies. I’ve tried a few along the way that are super helpful. For me nothing provides the wide sweep relational equivalent of sound surround at the movies that family constellations does. As well, it is fairly lavish in transgenerational recognition, and collective trauma, such as the legacies of colonialism, war, displacement and the torrid aftermath of ‘natural disasters’, which are still sometimes referred to as acts of god, especially by your insurance company. And all the familiar forms of abuse.

So, if you’ve tried therapies and still have your unhelpful patterns in your cross body bag, or you’ve never experienced any sort of therapy, give family/systemic constellations a go. It's not a magic one off event that wipes your trauma slate clean, but it is super effective at lighting the way to understanding, acceptance of what is, what can't be changed, where you fit in the family scheme of things, and enabling you to offload what is not yours to carry. You will certainly feel how resilient you are and how you have protected yourself. There are lots of facilitators around. I’m one. I work in English, but love to hear accents, in person or online at times to suit you and your schedule.
